Description

German Hunting Kit, Early 1500s

This was my main Spring 2010 project because I've always fancied Maximilian's hunting wardrobe: [link] [link] [link] Albrecht Durer's St. Eustace [link] also gave me a good base for the boots and the traditional horn belts.

Everything seen here (except for the spurs and hosen) was made over the course of five months. The waffenrok or that green skirted thing took longer than any piece of clothing I've made to date, including my 1750s Regimental coat. Using a heavily modified Recontructing History pattern, 90% of it was sewn by hand. It has twelve skirt gores and the orange trim had to be sewn on to every one of those gores. Made of green cashmire (polyester, unfortunately :noes:), gold silk lining, and orange wool/viscose trim.

The doublet is the same as that in my 1470s Italian shots and is entirely out of period and nationality to be worn here but I've yet to make a German one.

The shirt or hemd is the real deal though. Made by hand with 100% linen with the nifty pleated collar and cuffs smocked together.

The boots are leather and made of three pieces - a sole, a foot covering, and then the long part up the leg. (Terminology win - can you tell I'm not a cobbler??) But I mocked up the pattern based on another Durer work: [link] and only left off the buckles.

The hunting horn belt (you can only see a little of the horn sticking out on my right side) is leather and the typical jaeger criss-cross pattern was cut into it with a swivel knife.

The hat is the same one seen here: [link] and you actually wouldn't wear that hunting because it would get caught on stuff. But you CAN wear it whilst looking out the window and thinking about hunting.
