Artist's Comments

Haven't had much time for art this year due to grad school and dozens of other soul-destroying things but every-so-often I get the chance to squeeze something in.

Did this back in April when I was supposed to be writing essays - it was originally intended to be something bigger but that didn't happen.

This is probably my favourite Copernicus drawing to date just because it best fits the way I see him in my head - stately, kind, with a sort of quiet humour. Could be totally missing the mark with that though. It's unbelievably frustrating how little information we have on his life and personality. There are only sixteen or so extant letters from him and eleven of those are written to Bishop Dantiscus, a controlling, egotistic man who fancied himself quite a great astronomer. Copernicus was never on particularly good terms with Dantiscus and his letters to the Bishop have a chilly formality to them. Consequently, he is generally perceived as cold and aloof by scholars. But in contrast, his Dedication to Pope Paul III in De Revolutionibus seems to have an earnest and humble quality to it mixed with a slightly self-conscious humour. That is the version I'm going with.

Anyways, the best we can do is speculate.

You are absolutely welcome! Torun is one of the neatest places I've ever been. Glad you like all of my Copernicus madness. :D

Thank you! As Torunians we are very glad you like our city. And it's good to hear, that Copernicus is known in other countries. As a historian studying at University of Nicolaus Copernicus I can say, that we are doing our best to make his name more common and known. And it doesn't matter, that Germans and Poles are arguing, did Copernicus was German or Polish. The matter is, that he was the best known citizen of Torun. I must say, that your 'madness' is very nice!

Yeah, it's absolutely beautiful when you're walking north across the bridge. That was the first time I saw it and I think I just about died.

Oh yeah, that debate is madness. I love it how the title page of De Revolutionibus lists Copernicus as 'Nicolai Copernici Torunensis.' "By Nicolaus Copernicus of Torun," of course. And I'm sure he thought of himself as such, rather than specifically German or Polish.

What kind of history are you studying? I bet he features pretty big!

Wow. Your knowledge about Copernicus is pretty wide. Most peope think, that the title is De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium (which title, what a shame, is written on monument in front of our university's rector office). You know, in the Institute of History in Torun we have separate office, which is called "Workshop of Copernicology". On one of my classes I had to find every copy of 1st and 2nd edition of De Revolutionibus in Denmark (other students had other countries) and write an essay about it, who was the owner, where the book is now, in what state it is now and so on. It was quite fascinating, to know, how many known people (or totally anonymous) could have one copy of the book.

But, to be honest, I'm not an expert of Copernicus, it's rather a hobby, not real science. I'm specializing in history of Scandinavian countries, especially Norway.

I almost forgot to say: last year in Torun we established a fountain, Cosmopolis Fountain (link to see [link]=pl&hq=cosmopolis&hnear=toru%C5%84&cid=9165629240762222707 ). It was created in memoriam of Copernicus... and it was designed, that streams of water flow from the Copernicus' heliocentric system. Generally it was made as one of sides of De Revolutionibus (you can see it [link] here). And just in front of the fountain is the monument of asteroid 1299 Toruń (you can see it [link] here).
