Tene Mensuram by ColonelLiamRoss Tene Mensuram by ColonelLiamRoss
Taken by Azulox Photography at Lysts on the Lake 2012 - International Jousting Tournament at Taylor, Texas.

The hat is made with the Henry VII Hat pattern from Lynn McMasters. Can't take any credit for anything else beyond the paint-job on the shield, which was done in the truck on the way down. The design is based on one found on a renntartsch that supposedly belonged to Maximilian I. The motto - "Halt Mass" - is his as well and means "Be moderate."

Aw thanks for saying so! Been mostly getting burned out with animation projects so haven't actually done any drawings of my own...

My impression of jousts I've seen here is that there's a real aura of celebrity around the jouster. They have the same swag as a drag racer. Kinda hypocritical of Max to espouse moderateness while engaging in high-adrenaline contact sports IN. MY. OPINION.

Meine Gott im Himmel! You leave dA for a bit - come back to revisit the old favourites and they've gotten into jousting!! So jealous. So jealous!

Haha, yeah, sort of a weird thing. I did it because I wanted to see why Maximilian I was so into it and dayum, it's pretty intense!

Miss seeing your art around here, btw!

Thats a fine armor, mylady ... * -*

And the Jousting-Tournaments are impressing, thats for sure ... it would be great, to have this also in europe (... yeah, in good old england they have ... but not on the european mainland :C ).

Btw. is this a unique armor, made to measure?

Thanks! Glad you like it. It's borrowed from my team-mate actually. Used to belong to another member of our group. I'm only using it until I get my own gear lined up.

Oh man, Europe has got a TONNE of tournaments! I know there's a big one coming up in Denmark in June and then another in the Netherlands. Poland has a few, Belgium has a few too. Whereabouts are you located?

That looks amazing! You look fabulous in all that armor. :)

By boyfriend is going to begin mounted combat and possibly jousting in August or so. I would love to begin mounted archery, but money prevents me. I'm happy seeing my beau up there though. :)

Thanks! It's really good for making one feel entirely badass. :D

Mounted combat is very cool. Is there a particular group he is training with? There was a lady at this tournament teaching it - wondering if it's the same outfit. Also, horse archery ftw! If you've got access to a horse, the only thing you really need to buy is the horse bow. I got mine from this guy here - he's fantastic - [link] Some are more expensive than others but his Old Scythian Model is usually around 95 Euros or so. Not entirely cheap but probably the best bow out there for that price!

Very cool! You really have talent for these costumes and designs. :)

So..do you get hit dead-on by the opponents lance? Does it hurt? Or does it just glance off your shield?

Thank you!

To be honest, it depends how good their targetting is. You often get nice, solid hits from the more experienced jousters. The lances we used down there have drilled balsa tips that are 33" long so this absorbs most of the impact. Unhorsings are extremely rare at this style of tournament.

And it doesn't hurt at all, unless you catch it somewhere that you don't have armour. And even then, you're so ramped up on adrenaline, you don't really care. :D

Thanks, bro. It was a total last-minute thing. Was originally going to do something uber-complicated with a Burgundian lady on there saying something in Flemish about big noses but I didn't want to bring fifty different types of paint with me.

Haha, weird story actually. I'm really interested in Emperor Maximilian I and he was just wild about jousting. I wanted to see what it was like.

Haha, well that is absolutely wicked. I'm all about trying new things and doing stuff no one would expect. So dammit, I'm going to joust some time. Probably should brush up on my horse riding too. :P
