Reed Cassidy (played by Martin Henderson) from Flyboys, a recent film about the Americans who volunteered with the Escadrille Lafayette in the French air service during WWI. More info here: [link]

Since the film came out last month, I don't have a decent full-length shot of Cassidy but I did put together a collage of different images pulled from the Web. All are (C) Skydance Productions. You can see different parts of the uniform in different areas. [link]

Both the jacket and breeches are made and lined with a 100% Cotton Denim Lave that I found at Wal-Mart. I came up with the breeches pattern myself but the jacket was a little more tricky so I used an old pattern (McCall’s Easy Stitch ‘n Save 8029), which turned out to be really bad and really huge - I had to draft the pocket patterns from my reference pictures and after redoing everything about fifteen times, it finally looked right.

The insignia on the collar tabs and the chevrons on the left arm are painted. The French pilot's badge was carved out of two pieces of very stiff cardboard and painted as well. I bought the blanks for the medal ribbons - unfortunately, I couldn't get ribbon that was the right colour so I went with the closest options. The flight gaiters are made of leather with brass buckles - I was working from memory on their construction since I didn't have a picture reference. I used my old riding shoes since they looked sufficiently beat-up and the shirt underneath was bought from (surprise) Wal-Mart and modified. The brown belt seen in the other shots (commonly called a 'Sam Brown' belt) is actually vintage WWI.

Yeah, it really was! It's great to find another fan... Too bad the critics don't feel the same way but I guess that's nothing new!

Thanks for the comment! I'm REALLY glad to hear it looks the way it should. :D

Thanks. :) It takes SO MUCH bloody time and effort but the results always (well, nearly always...) make it worthwhile! :D

Thanks, Inki! Yeah, it's always a push trying to find things that work, especially when you have to modify them after you've found them! I was particularly anal with this one which resulted in more than 60 hours of making, remaking, remaking, remaking, remaking... you get the picture! I hope things are going well with your helmet and I CAN'T WAIT to see everything put together!!
