Je Vois Tout

Memories are painful bloody things. It's tough being the last one left. You can't help but think that your buddies would still be around if you had done more, flown better, and kept your eyes open. The kills you get are nothing better than infinitesimal satisfactions, the brevity of which are only rivalled by the speed of the bullets you send hurtling towards the enemy every day with a strange degree of airborn apathy. Sure there's the bragging rights for the pub later that night, when everyone tries to forget the horrors of the day in delightfully drunken ignorance. You succeed for a bit in this respect as you swig from the Bottle of Death amidst the approving shouts. Nonsensical oblivion results and you grin idiotically at the others as you proclaim the Escadrille's praises and call down curses on every Hun pilot in Germany. Yet the inanity is fleeting too. By the small hours of the morning you find yourself alone again, wondering why you hadn't done more.
